Notes

  • Sources are spotty for James Marshal Harkins.  But some familygenealogies, report him born in South Carolina, matching the 1850census report..  Reports for an alternative birthplace are NorthCarolina and Georgia.  South Carolina is most surely the correctstate.  Some family sources spell his middle name Marshal while othershave Marshall.

In the 1850 census, James Harkins is living next door to his widowedmother Nancy and her two other sons Tilman R and Asbury B Harkins.

A couple of Harkins family genealogies report the full name of JamesMarshal's wife as Sarah M Bartles.  Few sources are documented for theinformation in many of the genealogies, but the clarity and detail ofthe information presented in one or two reflects family sourcing andcredibility.

One by Brendy Martinez provides some details about family members anddeath locations.  But notice that this death date cannot be theredeath report of the same person, born in 1819!

Some genealogies (like the one noted above) report the death of JamesMarshall Harkins in 1947.  But note this could not be the same person! I suspect this is a grandson, but have not tried to follow thechildren of John (born 1818-19) and Sarah.  The Alabama Death Recordsreport that a James M Harkins died on 22 May 1947 in Jefferson County(Birmingham).  Several genealogies report he died on 20 May 1947 in DeKalb County, Alabama.  It appears that the latter was his address ofresidence at the time of death, but he died in Birmingham, probably inhospital.  I have not been able to figure out why this date is twodays earlier than the death certificate reports.

One genealogy reports that James M died in Shelby County, Alabama, butthe date of death is in 1947, when he would have been 128 years old!
