Notes

  • John Bailey Keith's middle name is spelled Baily in some sources, including some genealogies.  Most documents spell it Baily.  He islisted in all the censuses as John B Keith.  His father Samuel had abrother referred to in censuses and genealogies also as John B.  It islikely Bailey/Baily was his middle name also.  A summary ofparticipants in the Civil War spells it Bailey.

I note that this information reports that John Bailey died in HamiltonCounty, but family sources have reported he died in Whitfield County,Georgia.  Whitfield County, Georgia, is just south of Hamilton County,Tennessee.  Perhaps his residence was in Whitfield County at the timeof death, but he actually died in Hamilton County, perhaps in aChattanooga hospital.

Keith, Elizabeth 20 F B Domestic Servant  Virginia

Note that there is a domestic servant named Elizabeth Keith in thehousehold.  She is reported as born in Virginia.  Since she has thesame last name, it would appear she is from a former slave familyassociated with the Keith family.  Her birth in Virginia, however, does not correlate with the previous residences of John and hisparents.  His father Samuel was born in South Carolina and his motherSusan Melinda was born in North Carolina.

In 1880, the Keiths live in Whitfield County.

Note that in this census, John's father's birthplace now says GA, notSC.  Similarly, Mary's mother is now shown as born in North Carolina, not Georgia, and her father in North Carolina rather than SouthCarolina.

All the sons are single in this census report.  Callie (California),whom we expect to be about 21 now, is out of the house and apparentlymarried with her own household.  Althy (Althia) likewise.  William isreported as born in February 1880, yet in the June census of 1880, hewas already reported as 1 year old.

Birth dates are interestingly different from those reported in familygenealogies on some children.  The date in genealogies for Dave (DavidV) is 2 November 1867.  The census reports September 1867.  Samuel isreported born in January 1879, while genealogies report 12 March 1877. Lewis (Louis C) is reported as born in  August 1883, whilegenealogies report 12 December 1882.

Two children appear here that I have not seen reported in genealogies: Hershell and Arnold.  Hershell's name is spelled Herschel in 1910, asis his son Herschel Jr.  Arnold was born in Tennessee, so thisindicates they had moved north into Tennessee before August 1891.

Since John died in 1907, Mary appears with her son John Bailey as thehead of the household.  In 1920, Mary is back in Fincher District ofWhitfield County, Georgia, as head of her household with only her36-year-old single son Louis in the home with her.  David and Louisare still single and both are living with Mary in 1930.
