In 1900, living next door to John and his family appears to be hisbrother Robert. Enumerated as R D Shields, his wife's name is Emma M. Like John, his birthplace is Texas, and his father is reported bornin Tennessee and his mother in Missouri. (Though it seems Illinois isthe correct state of birth for their mother.) In 1880, their motherwas reported as born in Tennessee, as was their father. Note that in1910, John's mother is reported born in Kentucky, and in 1920, it isTennessee again. In 1930 he either did not report his mother's birthstate or the enumerator failed to write it down at the time, reportingonly US.
