Notes

  • Family history of the Gregorys of Oklahoma reports Amanda's birthdayas 22 February 1861, but we see that she was recorded in the 1860census as 4 months old in June.

The month of February matches the age of 4 months reported in thecensus.  The year should be 1860.  The year was somehow recorded wrongor remembered wrongly in family memory.

Family memory reports that they were married in Marietta, ChickasawNation.  Marietta is in what became Love County, Oklahoma, north ofthe Red River from Cook County, Texas.  James Toliver's family livedin or near Gainesville, and were registered in the 1860 census.  But Ihave not found them in the 1880 census.  They may have actually livedacross the border in Chickasaw Nation even at the time of themarriage, as the family tradition report.

Note that both area stated to be residents of Cook County, Texas.  thecounty seat is Gainesville, just south of the Red River.  The nextyear Toliver and Mandy's first child was born in Marietta, LoveCounty, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory.  They are enumerated therein the 1900 census.

In 1910 and 1920, we find Amanda and her second husband James ToliverGreen in Richland Township (near Marlow) of Stephens County, Oklahoma. Marlow is the county seat of this county.  This is where I recall asa child meeting their children, my great aunts.

Marlow is not far from Lindsay, in Garvin County, and Chickasha, inGrady County.  These towns, both about a half-hour drive north ofMarlow, were where my grandparents of each side lived, so on occasionwe would go to Marlow for visits or family gatherings.  I have cousinsand their descendants living there now.

I also later discovered that my grandmother Jenkins, Julia VirginaTerry, also had brothers and sisters living in Marlow, where they hadall grown up.  I do not remember ever knowing this, until I beganresearch that family a in 2006.  Marlow is where my grandparentsJenkins married and lived for some time.

Amanda Tatum is listed in both 1910 and 1920 as Mandy.  In 1910,Amanda's middle initial is shown as J, instead of A.  There is nomiddle name or initial in 1920.  James Toliver is listed in 1910 asJames T and in 1920 as James.  Their three daughters are still at homewith them in 1920:  Effie, Stella and Lizzie.

Amanda is buried in the Center Cemetery, Center, Pontotoc County,Oklahoma.  Her gravestone has the name as Amanda Green.  I have notfound out when she moved to Center from Marlow.

Lou Ila Gregory Jenkins gave me the marriage date, as well as thebirth dates for both James Toliver Green and Amanda Tatum West.Loretta Gregory Gay gave me the place of marriage.
