Richard le Scrope (born on 31st May 1393 in Bolton, Wensleydale,Yorkshire) was the eldest son of Roger le Scrope, 2nd Lord Scrope ofBolton. He became Lord Scrope of Bolton at the age of 9, after hisfather's death (3rd December, 1402). He became a ward of RalphNeville, 1st Earl of Westmoreland. He married on 31st December, 1413in Raby, Durham, Margaret Neville (born June, 1396, in Raby, Durham,died 1463; buried before 3rd March, 1464, Chrch Astn Friar, Clare,Suffolk), daughter of Ralph de Neville and Margaret de Stafford.Margaret Neville was the sister of Cecily Neville, 'The Rose of Raby',who married The Duke of York, father to Edward IV, The Duke ofClarence and Richard III.The Baron and Baroness had two sons:
· Henry le Scrope - born in 1418, became 4th Baron Scrope of Bolton
· Richard le Scrope - became Bishop of Carlisle
He fought at Agincourt in 1415. Richard le Scrope was killed at theSiege of Rouen on the 29th August, 1420. He was buried in St. Agatha,Yorkshire, England.

The seat of the Bolton Lordship of the Scropes was Bolton Castle inWensleydale, in County Yorkshire. The castle was built by Richard,2nd Lord of Scrope of Bolton.
"It was built between 1378 and 1399 by Richard le Scrope, LordChancellor, and is an example of a quadrangular castle. The castle isstill owned by the descendants of the Scrope family and is a touristattraction. The castle was damaged in the English Civil War, but muchof it remains. Mary, Queen of Scots, was held for six months in thecastle."
